Google Audio Search

As you must have noted by now that there is a Audio Search Option in Google Search.
This is the new experimental program from google like many others.

For Audio Searching you just have click on the small mic icon in the search bar and start speaking . It is quite a powerful as it is alomost 99% accurate. The accuracy of the search can also vary from accent to accent. I tried with different voices and it provided a quite good result.

I am wondering what can be the use of it. Many would prefer typing instead of speaking for search query. As this is the new initiative from google we can see more advanced feature and application of this technology.

I think it load only sometimes, it is working in Google Chrome and that is only for few searches . The reason may be that it is still in the beta stage and they are just testing it.
Although Google Launched Audio Search about few weeks back( 1 or 2) but that it was not so much accurate but now it work like magic.

So go ahead and search yourself and expose to the nextgen technology.

Google Ads Showing "Adchoices" Label | "Adchoices" label instead of "Ads by Google"

Many of you must have noticed that the "i" symbol on google ads has been replaced by "adchoices" symbol. When a user click on the "Ads by Google" it take them to a page which more informationon the advertising policy.

Now you can see a blue triangle shape on google ads which expands to "Adchoices".


Google says on there adsense blog : "We'll soon start to change our in-ads notice icon to a new icon that expands to an "AdChoices" label. These notifications were developed by the online advertising industry’s Self-Regulatory Program for Online Behavioral Advertising to more proactively give users notice and choice about the ads they see. With the change from our "i" icon and "Ads by Google" label to these new notifications, we hope to show our support for this cross-industry initiative, and to increase our users' understanding about ad choices through adoption of an icon they'll see on ads across the web".

Now all the ads by google will shows the "Adchoices" icon majority on English Text site.
If a user will Click on the "AdChoices" label will be redirected to a google page which will show more information about advertising industry.

Google Apps Debuts a Certification Program

Google has been making strides in the enterprise market, but it's still a very small player. One way of growing the business is by having people 'on the ground,' so to speak, to promote and sell Google Apps to businesses which may not have heard of the suite or which don't have the personnel to make the switch.


That's the reasoning behind the Google Apps Authorized Resellers program. Now, Google is going one step further with the Google Apps Certification Program which enables specialists to earn an official certification from Google.

"As our partner community has more than doubled in the last year to over 2,500 partners in over 70 countries, partners have been seeking opportunities to demonstrate their expertise and competence to a growing customer base," Stephen Cho, Director, Google Apps Channels, wrote.

"We are therefore happy to announce the Google Apps Certification Program, which recognizes IT professionals for demonstrated abilities to sell, deploy, develop, and support Google Apps," he announced.

The resellers program is a great way of getting companies from around the world, which may not be inherently tech-oriented, to understand the benefits of Google Apps, by having sales representatives and experts available in the countries and cities where they operate.

The new certification program makes it easier for those companies to know which resellers they can trust the most and also helps the resellers differentiate themselves. For now, only one certification is available.

"Available today globally, is the first of these certifications, the Google Apps Certified Deployment Specialist, which certifies IT professionals who have demonstrated the fundamental knowledge and skills required to migrate to, configure, and deploy Google Apps," Cho explained.

The certification can be obtained completely online. The exam can be taken online as well and costs $100. It's only available in English for now, but Google plans to add support for other languages as well.

ChaCha and Salsa - Facebook Phones From HTC

Today at the Mobile World Congress, HTC Corporation announced two new handsets aimed specifically at those who are socially active, namely the HTC ChaCha and HTC Salsa, which include fast connectivity to Facebook.

Rumors on the upcoming availability of these handsets emerged a while ago, and now they proved real, with HTC ChaCha and HTC Salsa sporting a dedicated Facebook button for fast access to features of the social networking destination.

Both handsets come with HTC's Sense user interface, which was deeply integrated to include such social networking capabilities, the mobile phone maker notes. The phones run under Google's Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread platform.

“HTC has always understood that different people want different things and the new HTC ChaCha and Salsa offer special new ways to experience Facebook on a mobile device,” said Peter Chou, CEO of HTC Corporation.

“With more than 500 million active users worldwide, Facebook has become synonymous with the social web and we wanted to create the ultimate socially connected phones with mass market appeal.”

The Facebook button that HTC ChaCha and HTC Salsa feature is context aware, designed to pulse with light when content or updates can be shared on Facebook.

Users can update their status, upload a photo, share a Website, ‘check in’ to a location and more with the simple touch of a button.

“We have worked closely with HTC for several years on bringing Facebook to their devices and HTC ChaCha and HTC Salsa are the next stage,” said Henri Moissinac, Head of Mobile Business for Facebook. “HTC has brought Facebook to these two new devices in an innovative way enabling people to connect and share easily whenever they want, wherever they are.”

The ChaCha smartphone comes with a 2.6-inch, 480 x 320 resolution landscape touch screen and with a QWERTY keyboard on the front, a 5-megapixel camera on the back, and a VGA front-facing camera.

HTC Salsa boasts a 3.4-inch, 480 x 320 resolution touch display, a 5-megapixel photo snapper, VGA forward-facing camera, and other smartphone features more.

The HTC ChaCha and HTC Salsa smartphones are set to land on the market on Europe and Asia during the second quarter of the ongoing year. They will also be released in the US on AT&T's airwaves later this year.

Google Chrome 9 Final Released

Google Chrome 9 has now been pushed to the stable channel, marking the official release of the latest version of the popular browser. After a slight delay during the winter holidays, the team is back on schedule, releasing a stable release every six weeks. With such a short release schedule, new versions are nothing major, but Chrome 9 comes with plenty of things to enjoy.

WebGL the upcoming web 3D graphics standard is now built in and enabled by default.

Also new is Chrome Instant, the browser implementation of the Google Chrome concept. Finally, the Web Store is now fully supported in the stable channel.

"Today, we’re excited to bring several new features from Chrome’s beta channel to the stable build, including WebGL, Chrome Instant, and the Chrome Web Store," Erik Kay and Aaron Boodman, Software Engineers at Google, announced.

WebGL went from idea to de facto standard in less than two years. The technology is supported by many major browser makers, Apple, Mozilla and, of course, Google.

It enables developers to leverage the GPU capabilities of most modern computers for immersive games or lavish website graphics inside the browser.

Chrome Instant implements the concept behind Google Instant in the browser. It's not enabled by default, but if activated it allows users to simply start typing in the Omnibox while the page they are looking for, the search results start loading in the background.

"The Chrome Web Store is now open to all Chrome users in the United States. As part of this, we’ve now added a link to the Chrome Web Store on the New Tab page, along with two sample apps. (If you don’t use these sample apps, they will automatically disappear after some time)," Google explained.

Google Announces Gmail Priority Inbox for HTML5 Mobile Browsers

Users who feel overwhelmed by the amount of emails they get will be thrilled to find that Google has just announced Priority Inbox support for Gmail mobile. The new feature helps users save time by automatically identifying important incoming messages.

According to Google, Gmail uses multiple ways to prioritize incoming messages, including keeping track of the contacts the user emailed and chatted with the most, as well as which keywords appear most frequently in the messages users open.

Until now, Priority Inbox was only available on desktops and Android devices, but as of today it will be available for most mobile browsers that support HTML5, such as devices running iOS 3+.

Although, the feature may work well on mobile browsers such as Dolphin, which lacks HTML5 support for the moment, Priority Inbox may not be accessible on other mobile browsers with no HTML5 support.


Priority Inbox has several customization options that help users prioritize specific emails, which are accessible from the Settings link in the upper-right corner of the Gmail interface.

Users can make changes in any of the available sections: Default inbox, Priority Inbox sections, Filtered mail, Importance markers and Show Priority Inbox.

In addition, users are strongly advised to mark each email that has been mistakenly tagged as important or not important, by selecting the message in question, and clicking the “mark as important” or “mark as not important” button.

These buttons are easily recognizable as they have a plus or a minus icon and are placed just to the left of the Move to and Labels drop-down menus.

As soon as a message is marked as not important, it will be moved out of the “Important” section. Over time, the Priority Inbox feature will learn what’s important and incorporate user feedback into its algorithm.

Fring has just announced that the owners of Android-based smartphones can now enjoy a new version of their mobile application, released with a nice range of enhancements so that users would benefit from better video calls, voice calls, or chat.

IPv6 - A New Goal For Facebook and Google

The dwindling number of IPv4 addresses and the very slow adoption of the newer IPv6 has been a problem for years, but things are only now starting to move in the right direction, even as addresses are expected to run out sometime this year. Google, Facebook and Yahoo, which now account for a big percentage of internet traffic are working together to promote World IPv6 Day.

It's more than just a marketing thing, all of them will be enabling IPv6 infrastructure on that day, which may lead to problems for a small minority of users.

Google and YouTube offer IPv6 versions

Google has been working on getting ready for IPv6 for several years now. The main search engine is accessible through a IPv6 address from ipv6.google.com. When YouTube introduced IPv6 support, traffic over the new protocol surged.

Google is also offering its services by default over IPv6 for ISPs that have made the switch, by using a whitelist of providers with native IPv6 connectivity.

When it comes to major websites, Google has been leading the switch to the new protocol, but that's understandable since the co-creator of the TCP/IP stack, Vint Cerf one of the people that have made the biggest contributions to the internet as we know it, has been working for the company since 2005 and spearheading efforts to get the infrastructure ready for the switch.

"In the short history of the Internet, the transition to IPv6 is one of the most important steps we will take together to protect the Internet as we know it. It's as if the Internet was originally designed with a limited number of telephone numbers, and we're soon going to run out," he explained.

Google has been keeping track of the IPv6 traffic reaching its servers and, while it has seen an accelerated growth in the past year, it's still a tiny fraction, 0.2 percent, of the traffic Google gets in a regular day.

But Google is not alone in this, Facebook, undeniably one of the most popular and visited websites on the planet, has been offering a IPv6 version since summer through www.v6.facebook.com.

Interestingly, the IPv6 address of Facebook is 2620:0:1cfe:face:b00c::3, the site is actually very proud of that.

"As a next generation protocol, IPv6 provides a vast number of addresses by today's standards — 4 billion times the number that are available under IPv4. Telecom carriers, ISPs, OS makers, hardware manufacturers, Web companies, and governments around the world are depending on IPv6 to continue growth of the Internet," Facebook's Donn Lee explained.

More than Half of the Android Phones Run On Android 2.2 Froyo

Google's Android 2.2 Froyo platform iteration is accounting for the largest number of Android devices out there, being present on no less than 51.8 percent of the active Androids that accessed the Market in the two weeks prior to January 4th, 2011.

The latest data published on the Android Developers website shows that this OS version gained over 8 percent share of the Android distribution charts since December 1st, 2010, when it was loaded on 43.4 percent devices.

According to the said data, Android 2.1 was present on 35.2 percent of all active Android devices out there, down from the 39.6 percent it accounted for as of December 1st.

The charts show a newcomer too, namely Android 2.3 Gingerbread, which accounted for 0.4 percent of active handsets accessing the Market during the said time frame.

Older platforms, namely Android 1.5 and Android 1.6 decreased their share even more, being present on 4.7 percent and 7.9 percent of Android devices, respectively.

It's a common fact that Google is offering these details to developers, offering them a glimpse at most active Android devices out there, so that they could focus their applications on these OS releases.

Although Google calls it platform distribution, there are some who stress on the fact that this is actually the fragmentation of Android that is being showed here.

This state of fact might also be proved by the fact that Google has just unveiled a new flavor of the mobile OS, Android 3.0 Honeycomb, which was built from the ground up to fit the large screen of tablet PCs.

Designed specifically for tablet PCs, the new OS flavor widens even more the gap between various Android iterations.

However, it should start appearing in these charts as soon as the first devices running under it land on shelves sometime in the first quarter of the ongoing year.




“The [...] stacked line graph [to the left] provides a history of the relative number of active Android devices running different versions of the Android platform. It also provides a valuable perspective of how many devices your application is compatible with, based on the platform version,” Google notes.
