Top 12 Amazing Animals of 2010

Since everyone makes 'Top Tens' on 2010 on everything, here is a top twelve of this year's coolest animals, based on information provided by New Scientist.

To avoid all 'discrimination' and to keep everyone happy, the order of the animals is alphabetical.

The Bone skipper

This little fly was believed to be extinct for 160, so when it showed up in Spain, it amazed the entire research community.

The bone skipper was believed to be the first fly to be exterminated by humans, but it seems that somewhere along the road, we missed it.

This nocturnal animal that feeds on the rotten flesh of large mammals, is active only during the winter and you can identify it by its glowing, large, orange head.

The Cacoxenus indagator

Here is another fly, that actually has a very rough start of its adult life – the Cacoxenus indagator.

It has to fight for its survival, since at one point, it's walled up in the dark, with no food and no escape, and its only way out is to smash its way through a stone wall with its head.

A human being would probably die, but this fly knows exactly what to do, and it usually finds the right direction.

The Great bustard

This huge 'chicken' is the heaviest living animal that can fly – the great bustard.

Females never go beyond 5 kilograms, but males, they usually weigh between 10 and 16 kilograms, and some can even reach 21 kilograms.

This is quite a difference between mates, but it seems that females prefer big 'guys', with long necks and opulent whiskers.

The Long-eared desert bat

Don't be fooled by its funny-looking ears, because it seems that the long-eared desert bat, might as well be one of the toughest animals alive.

The proof is that it has Palestine yellow scorpions for dinner, regardless of whether they sting it or not.
The Mummichog

This cute little fish is actually amazingly resilient and it can cope with all kinds of environmental conditions.

The mummichog can survive in levels of pollution that would kill almost any living being, and it was also the first fish that was sent into space.

The Olm

This 'baby dragon' is actually a blind little amphibian with translucent skin, that could hold the secret of longevity.

This small salamander spends its life in cave water – and it is quite a long life, since the olm can reach as much as 100 years old.

It has no eyes nor skin pigmentation, and through its entire life, it remains extremely inactive.

Could that be the key to eternal life?

The Oriental hornet

The oriental hornet is one 'electric' wasp.

It possesses a small solar cell in its abdomen, that can generate a small electrical voltage in its cuticle, and this impulse actually helps the hornet wake up in the morning.

The Peppermint shrimp

This is not really the name of a food course, but that of a brightly-colored crustacean, with a very hard to pronounce style of life – it is a protandric simultaneous hermaphrodite.

For those who are confused, this shrimp starts out as a male, but sometimes, if it runs our of mating options, it turns into a hermaphrodite with both male and female reproductive organs.

Apparently they are not very eager to change sides, so they usually wait around for someone else to do it first.

The Spinoloricus x

This pink little animal is actually the first complex creature that is known to be able to survive and reproduce entirely without oxygen.

There are many single-celled organisms that live without oxygen but the spinoloricus x is a remarkable creature with millions of cells, that thrives in sediments deep under the Mediterranean Sea (thick with salt and hydrogen sulphide gas).

The Symbion pandora

The Symbion pandora is not a new animal species, but rather a new kind of animal.

This animal showed up on the mouths of Norway lobsters, and since nobody had seen it before, it had to be considered as a new phylum.

It is very interesting to study since it is quite a complex creature, and the intriguing thing is that despite years of study, no one knows how it evolved.

The Syringammina fragilissima

The first specimen of this new group of organisms, called the single-celled xenophyophores, was first discovered in the late summer of 1882.

The species they found is the exceptional Syringammina fragilissima, and it is a single-celled organism.

The special thing about it is that unlike other single-celled organisms that are microscopic, this one normally reaches a width of 10 centimeters, and sometimes even twice that size.

It also surrounds itself with a crusty structure called a test, that is considered to be the largest object made by a single cell.

The Yellow-bellied three-toed skink

Finally, this Australian reptile has been caught in plain evolution since it contains two populations: one that gives birth to live young and another that lays eggs.

Still, they can interbreed and clearly belong to the same species.

Hopefully, at the end of next year, we would have found another twelve amazing creatures on our planet, to talk about.

Top 10 Music in 2010

s hard as record labels and industry people try to prevent leaks and illegal downloading of the materials from various artists, these attempts seem futile. With 2010 nearly over, iLeaks has several charts of the most downloaded (illegally) music of the year.

As any singles or album chart can prove, the most sought after artists of the year were the likes of Rihanna, Katy Perry, Ke$ha, Kanye West, Eminem and, of course, the ever-present Lady Gaga.

Artists

Gaga actually comes first in the top 10 artists provided by the aforementioned e-zine, with Katy Perry and Ke$ha next. Rihanna and Nicki Minaj round up the top 5.

Christina Aguilera, for whom 2010 was supposed to represent the year of her comeback but which turned out less successful than she expected, is at number 6.

Eminem, Taylor Swift, newcomer Willow Smith and Disney teen idol Miley Cyrus are up next, on the final positions of top 10 artists whose work has been most downloaded illegally in 2010.

Albums

Based on figures from iLeaks itself and Twitter feedback, we find that Rihanna's latest album, “Loud,” was the most downloaded illegally. Luckily for her, it was also a hit with fans who paid money for it.

Christina Aguilera, though, was not as lucky: her “Bionic” album leaked online in its entirety only a week ahead of the official release and then, when it came out, it failed to get the expected response.

At the same time, critics were less than enthusiastic about it, saying it underwhelmed for trying too hard.

Katy Perry's “Teenage Dream” also generated plenty of traffic, while the recently released “Pink Friday” from Nicki Minaj was the fourth most downloaded illegally album.

Miley Cyrus' first grown-up release (her words, not ours), a definite move from the Disney-made Hannah Montana image, “Can't Be Tamed” lands at number 5. Critics may have hated it but people sure seemed to love it, especially if it came free of charge.

The last five positions of the albums charts are occupied as follows: Taylor Swift with “Speak Now,” Robyn with “Body Talk,” Eminem's “Recovery,” Kanye West and his “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy,” dubbed the best music release of the year, and Kylie Minogue's “Aphrodite.”

Tracks

The top 10 of the most downloaded illegally tracks offers a few surprises, starting with the top position, which goes to Britney Spears and “Telephone.”

Lady Gaga shouldn't be sorry though that she didn't come first in people's preferences, as illicit as they may be, because she came very close: she's at number 2 with “Greatest” / “Then You Love Me.”

Katy Perry is third with “California Gurls” (ft. Snoop Dogg), while Eminem and Rihanna land in at number 4 with this summer's smash hit “Love the Way You Lie.” Christina Aguilera is fifth with “Not Myself Tonight,” her first single off “Bionic. ”

The top 10 of most demanded tracks is rounded up with “Whip My Hair” by Willow Smith, “Only Girl (In the World)” from Rihanna, Miley Cyrus' “Can't Be Tamed,” “Roman Revenge” (ft. Eminem) from Nicki Minaj and Ke$ha's “We R Who We R.”

Videos

Not suprisingly, Lady Gaga's video for “Telephone” (ft. Beyonce) and for “Alejandro” were the most downloaded in 2010. Xtina's “Not Myself Tonight” was also high in demand on torrents, even if was just voted the worst music video of the year.

Best Celebrity Bodies of 2010

It's almost the end of the year and this can mean only one thing: the entire industry is taking a step back and having a proper look at what 2010 was like from all points of view.

Aside from the by-now traditional The Best and The Worst in film, music and fashion, we should also have a look at the Best Celebrity Bodies of the year that's about to end.

Fitness magazine decided to do just that, honoring the stars who have shown the most dedication to working out and staying in shape throughout 2010, from expectant moms to couples, and stars who have decided to make a change and be better, more toned and healthier versions of themselves.

Speaking of which, the first two celebs to make the cut for this year's top by Fitness are reality star Kelly Osbourne and singer and actress Jennifer Hudson.

As fans must know, both decided they wanted to lead healthier lives and consequently embarked on a journey that has been as successful as it's been documented in the press.

They are now healthier, slimmer, more toned and, of course, more confident. Because they both achieved amazing results (Hudson dropped 10 dress sizes, Osbourne 6), Fitness calls it a tie in the Best Celebrity Slim Down category.

Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth make the Cutest Workout Pair: they both train with Michael George, a fitness expert who, the mag says, “encourages strength training and working multiple muscle groups at once.”

In the young moms category, Fitness names Melissa Rycroft of DWTS and “The Bachelor” as the Best Baby Bump, while Bethenny Frankel is Best Body After Baby for losing an amazing 29 pounds in just 21 days – the healthy way.

For celebrities over 45, Fitness has created a special category called Best Age-Defiers and, here too, it's a tie between former “Friends” star Courteney Cox and comedienne Kathy Griffin.

“It’s a tie between Courteney Cox, 46, who stays fit with the Tracey Anderson Method, a combination of dance aerobics and toning, and Kathy Griffin, 50, who has been showing off her 'bangin’ bikini bod' this year, thanks to working out six days a week,” Fitness writes.

Country singer Carrie Underwood, a longtime vegetarian, is named Best Bridal Body, while Kate Middleton, a dedicated skier and rower, the fiancee of Prince William, is Best Bride-to-Be in terms of staying in shape.

To prove that this is not all about being stick-thin but actually about being healthy, Fitness mag also includes Christina Hendricks, the woman of the hourglass silhouette, in the Best Curves category.

“Actress Christina Hendricks is a fan of the BOSU ball, and she does treadmill and weight workouts. She also eats foods such as avocado and olive oil, regardless of the calories,” the magazine informs us.

Also in Fitness, we find that Kate Gosselin has the Best Mom Abs (after all, she did flaunt them on the much-talked about cover of People magazine in nothing but a two-piece swimsuit), while Audrina Patridge is Best Reality Starlet (having gotten in top shape with her recent stint on DWTS), while Lady Gaga, admittedly the most “provocative” star of 2010 as per CNN, has the Best Moves, thanks to personal trainer Harley Pasternak.

Public Figures of 2010

In the last hours of the year, it’s time to look at the public figures that shaped our culture for 2010. Mark Zuckerberg, Julian Assange, Kanye West, Michael Vick and Girl Talk are just some of the biggest names of 2010: the antiheroes that our culture assimilated.

As Spider-Man once learned, with great power comes great responsibility or, in the case of these guys mentioned above, great controversy and even greater legal actions.

Some of us love them, some hate them and some love to hate them, to speak in clichés.

2010 was definitely the year of the antihero, PopEater argues in a recent piece, a year when we saw amazing people do things that made them controversial at best and vilified at worst. As they say, it’s lonely at the top.

Take Mark Zuckerberg, for instance. He may have already agreed to donate most of his vast fortune to charity and he is definitely the creator of the biggest thing since Internet, the social network Facebook, but he’ll always be this blank-stared villain who is trying to steal people’s identity for profit and who would walk on his friends’ dead bodies to get what he wants.

Part of this image is due to this year blockbuster “The Social Network” and, as PopEater puts it, it doesn’t even matter if things really didn’t happen as they’re portrayed in the film. They probably didn’t, but no one will care.

As far as regular people are concerned, in a few years’ time, this is what Mark will be all about: whether we or he likes it or not, the film will soon blur the fine line between history and fiction, if only on the premise that at least part of it must have been true.

The same goes for the ever-raging debate on whether Facebook is guilty of breach of privacy online, and whether users’ personal information is used for profit. Mankind tends to better remember the bad over the good.

Kanye West is again a good example in this sense. Boasting an album that is easily the best release of the year, he’s still paying dues for an incident that happened over a year ago, when intoxicated both on alcohol and his usually inflated sense of self, he robbed country singer Taylor Swift of her moment in the spotlight at the VMAs.

Kanye West making the “Imma let you finish” speech
Enlarge picture
West has been vilified and severely punished for his transgression, which was considered all the more grave since Swift was the nation’s darling. Yet he’ll go down in history as the “Imma let you finish” guy a man who is as obnoxious as he’s brilliantly creative and talented.

Also in music, Girl Talk (Greg Gillis) perfectly embodies this duality, though he too verges more on the antihero side. As record labels struggle to plug all holes that’s costing them money, Girl Talk dodges copyright issues and creates new music by using tens of samples from well-known artists.

It’s copyright infringement taken to the next level, if you will.

In this sense, the DJ is an excellent example of industry’s cannibalistic tendencies and artistic creation at the same time, PopEater argues. And, while labels and music honchos would kill to have a go at him and the money he’s making off their artists, fans praise him as the future of music: a sound that is free (of charge) for all.

WikiLeaks’ Julian Assange: terrorist and savior
Enlarge picture
Of course, when it comes to being universally hated, there’s no better person at it than WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, seen as the worst kind of traitor / terrorist by governments and a preacher of transparency by masses.

“Assange preaches transparency by unleashing hidden truths around the world, and for the most part, he’s seen as a hero by the people – but he’s also public enemy No. 1 for assorted governments the world over,” PopEater writes.

“Because so many of his released documents could very possibly get people killed abroad or sever valuable international relations, he represents the balance between journalistic integrity and reckless idealism,” the e-zine says.

Other two antiheroes that got more than a fair share of media in 2010 are athletes: Michael Vick did time for torturing dogs, while LeBron James should do so (say his fans) for ditching his home team.

Sports is where the antihero is most easily recognizable, PopEater notes, because he’s glorified even when he’s hated and this couldn’t be more true for these two. Though fans despise them for what they did, no one’s contesting their being the most accomplished athletes of the past 2 decades.

Still, all antiheroes have in common just one thing: they don’t want to be it.

“It’s a lonely feeling,” says PopEater. “The entire state of Ohio hates LeBron. Vick will die known as a great quarterback, but also as a dog torturer. Russia wants Assange killed. Millions don’t trust Zuckerberg because they think he’s out to steal their private information for money. Record label executives wish they could sue Girl Talk for everything he’s worth. And Kanye West is arguably the most unpopular musician who happens to make amazing albums,” says the e-zine.

And, while universally hated, these guys are writing history – and have come into our homes in 2010 through various media channels.

“Society hates all these guys for different reasons than the ones that make us love them; such is the tragic romance of being a cultural antihero in a country still struggling to make its big comeback,” PopEater concludes.

GOTY 2010: Best Video Game – Fallout: New Vegas

It's hard to choose a Game of the Year when comparing video games from different genres but with my main criterion being ambition, there's no need to look for game of the year further than Fallout: New Vegas, the combination between action and role-playing game created by the team at Obsidian and published by Bethesda, who are now the holders of the franchise.

The great triumph for New Vegas is that it delivers a world which is closer to feeling alive than any other delivered in video gaming this year, including that of Mass Effect or that of Fable III.

The post apocalypse is believable and oddly beautiful and all the factions involved in the various stories and quests have motivations that are consistent and make sense within the confines of the world.

Obsidian sure knew video game writing and Fallout: New Vegas is the perfect showcase, allowing them to execute a number of callbacks to the previous titles in the series while also creating new gags and situations.

Everyone who plays should take the time to go to Vault 11 and read the scraps of information which deliver the chilling narrative and Caesar, with his mix of charisma and absurd moral code, is one of the most interesting characters I met in 2010.

Obsidian has also made New Vegas tougher than Fallout 3 and more rewarding, with feats like taking out the Alpha Deathclaws really being something to brag about around the office, adding gravitas to the world.

Yes, the game had a lot of bugs initially, linked to technical problems, like inexplicable crashes to desktop and freezes on consoles, but also to how the game progresses, leading to quests that cannot be completed and weird world results.

Obsidian has pushed out a number of patches which improve things significantly and it seems that the game could get a stream of downloadable content as long as Fallout 3.

Fallout: New Vegas has longevity (one playthrough can go to 60 hours easily), has replayability (at least four main paths and many more possible variations) and has character and that makes it my 2010 Game of the Year.

2010 Was Google Chrome's Year in the Browser Market

At least when it comes to adoption, 2010 was Google Chrome's year. Google's increasingly popular browser has gone through about five major versions and has pretty doubled or even trippled its market share, depending on who's numbers you trust.

Net Applications, which is more conservative about Chrome's growth, shows that the browser went from slightly above five percent in January to over nine percent in November.

Judging by Chrome's month to month growth for the past year, its market share may go over 10 percent in December, effectively doubling in one year.

Granted, it's still far behind Firefox, not to mention Internet Explorer, but both have been losing market share to Chrome.

StatCounter is even more optimistic with Google Chrome's growth. It started the year with 6.04 percent of the browser market and it's now at 13.35 percent and this is November's data.

Firefox, on the other hand is holding steady, most of Chrome's market share came from Internet Explorer according to the StatCounter data. Microsoft's dominant browser, all versions combined, lost seven percent points in the past year.

W3Counter, another popular source for browser market share numbers, paints a similar picture to StatCounter's. Chrome started out with 6.4 percent of the market and had 13.1 percent in November. Based on the trends, it should go over 14 percent in December 2010.

According to Google's own numbers, Chrome now has over 120 million users worldwide. This data is from early December from the Chrome Web Store / Chrome OS event.

That's triple the number of users it started the year with, Chrome had about 40 million users in January 2010, Google says. In May this year, it was up to 70 million active users. In the next months it added another 50 million.

The question now is, will Google Chrome continue to grow in 2011 like it did in 2010. The growth rate has been accelerating lately, but it remains to be seen if it can be sustained. Another interesting question is where will Chrome get its new users from, Internet Explorer or Firefox.

Most Boring Movie Titles of 2010

It’s almost the end of the year and this means this is as good a time as ever to have a look and see what 2010 brought in terms of best and worst in everything. As far as movies go, below is a list of the most boring movie titles of the year.

On the premise that a good movie must first have a good title, MovieFone set out to determine which were the releases that better stood out from the rest because of how boring their titles were.

Of course, this doesn’t hold any water the other way around: there have been some pretty excellent films that did have poor titles, without losing anything in terms of quality, says the e-zine.

An honorable mention goes to the recently released, star-packed romantic comedy “How Do You Know,” which not only is lackluster in terms of plot and performance, but it’s also been cursed with a too generic title that fails to offer the smallest insight into what the flick could all be about.

“Remember Me,” starring “Twilight” heartthrob Robert Pattinson as a brooding and troubled guy finding love, comes up next, with MovieFone saying the title is almost a guarantee that no one will remember it once the film is over.

“Let Me In,” one of the most critically acclaimed releases of 2010 is a remake of a film called “Let the Right One In,” that comes with a title perfectly illustrating how films are “dumbed down” for Americans, says the aforementioned e-zine.

“That title is the biggest problem. The nicely-worded original title, ‘Let the Right One In,’ had sinister connotations, but this one has been reduced to a simple, soft title that any non-vampire drama could have used. The only positive is that it can’t be mistaken for the original,” MovieFone argues.

Up next is “Life as We Know It,” which, according to MovieFone, also takes the cake for being among 2010’s worst rom-coms. The title is so vague that it could have easily been stuck to “Lord of the Rings” and it would have still made sense because, why not, LOTR is still about “life as we know it,” fictional as it may be.

The recently released “Never Let Me Go” is up next. Based on an original novel by Kazuo Ishiguro, this title is faulty because it hints of a rom-com (it’s not) and fails to relate to the dystopian world where clones are used for organ harvesting, which is where the action takes place. Then again, the book was called the same.

“Dear John” and “Letters to Juliet” come up next: both star Amanda Seyfried and both have uninspired and boring titles.

“Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole” is among MovieFone’s most boring titles of the year
Enlarge picture
“Firstly, is there anything less cinematic than someone writing a letter? Secondly, couldn’t they have come up with something more dynamic than ‘John’ and ‘Juliet’? What about some memorable nicknames? Why not ‘Dear Meathead’?” MovieFone writes.

Speaking of ties, the next position also goes to a duo of titles, both futile (and boring) attempts at kicking off franchises in the vein of “Harry Potter”: “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole” and “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief.”

Not only are these two titles excessively long – which prompted audiences to refer to them mostly as “the owls movie” and “Percy Jackson (Jackson who?)” – but they also set a dangerous precedent for upcoming sequels. What will these be called, MovieFone asks.

Sofia Coppola’s “Somewhere” is also ranked in this list. A good film (the e-zine considers it one of this year’s best), it has a soft title that will make it easier to forget, which is actually quite a shame.

“If you love a movie, that’s a huge help in remembering a soft title like ‘Somewhere.’ And, indeed, in this story of a lost and bored Hollywood actor, the title more or less fits. But it’s still one of those very minor, passive titles that will totally disappear if someone is combing through the current listings,” MovieFone says.

Honorable mentions also go to “The Town,” “The American,” “Just Wright,” “The Switch,” “The Next Three Days,” “You Again,” “Takers” and “Why Did I Get Married Too?”
