Apple Delays iOS 4.2 Launch to November 24, Source Claims

In what is starting to look like an intentional hold off to generate hype, Apple has reportedly delayed the iOS 4.2 software update release for the third time, according to a report by The Telegraph, which quotes reliable sources.

Initially, iOS 4.2 was believed to arrive in the first week of November. A last-minute discovery relating to WiFi connectivity reportedly prompted Apple to push the launch to this week.

However, now it appears it has been delayed again.

November 24 is the release date, says the paper, citing an unnamed, but allegedly reliable source.

It claims that Apple has refused to comment on the matter, reaffirming its original stance that iOS 4.2 will be released in November.

It is believed that the delay is tied to the aforementioned WiFi bug affecting iPad builds of the software.

If indeed true, it only makes sense for Apple to try and iron out every bug affecting the iPad version of iOS 4.2, not only because it’s fair to the customers, but because the update specifically targets the iPad with key new additions like multitasking, application folders, a unified mail inbox, AirPlay, AirPrint and more.

It has become increasingly apparent that the update, although an incremental release in the 4.x cycle, is a major one.

It also targets older-generation devices, such as the iPhone 3G and supported iPod touches via fixes for widely reported performance issues.

Specifically, the update should improve the responsiveness of user input on the former, and should help alleviate problems related to battery drainage for the latter category of devices.

It remains to be seen whether Apple has been able to isolate and properly patch these issues, given that recent incremental releases of iOS 4.0 have failed to do so.
