Apple has released iTunes 10.1, an update to its proprietary digital media player application used for playing and organizing digital music, video files, and iOS applications. The release adds iOS 4.2 support, including compatibility with the new AirPlay feature.
In anticipation of the iOS 4.2 release scheduled for this month, Apple has now launched iTunes 10.1, an update tasked with adding support for the new mobile operating system for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, as well as compatibility with the AirPlay feature, which enables users to stream videos from their iTunes library to the new Apple TV 2G.
In addition to these enhancements, iTunes 10.1 delivers a slew of improvements and bug fixes for more stability and better performance, Apple says.

Apparently, the new release also patches a number of security issues with the software, although Apple fails to specify which ones, on the Downloads area of its web site.
The company does offer a link to knowledge base article HT4435, where the security content of this week’s Mac OS X v10.6.5 and Security Update 2010-007 is detailed.
Apple lists the following requirements for the Mac and Windows versions of iTunes 10.1.
- Mac OS X version 10.5 or later
- QuickTime 7.6 or later; Support for HE-AAC requires QuickTime 7.6.4 or later
- Safari 4.0.3 or later
- 200MB of available disk space
- HD TV episodes can only be rented in the United States
Apple notes that Ping, its music-centric social network, is available in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Netherlands, United Kingdom, and the United States.
