iOS 4.2.1 Already Jailbroken

Tests carried out on the iOS 4.2.1 GM seed handed by Apple to developers this week have confirmed that the new build can be jailbroken using the iPhone Dev Team’s redsn0w 0.9.6 beta 2.

Offered as a free download to enrolled iOS developers this week, the third GM preceding the official release of Apple’s next iOS software update has been jailbroken in a test carried out using redsn0w, a simple jailbreak utility developed by the infamous iPhone Dev Team.

Notably, redsn0w 0.9.6b2 is based on geohot’s Limera1n exploit which can hack all current iOS devices.

According to the initial test results, iOS 4.2.1 can be jailbroken on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, and iPod touch devices. However, Cydia is not supported on iOS 4.2.1 as of yet, but it will be shortly, going by how fast the folks behind the application generally act to support the community.

Reportedly, Cydia is incompatible with iOS 4.2.1 builds because Apple has changed some of the private APIs used by the application in iOS 4.2.x, making it prone to crashing as the user attempts to launch the app.

According to the folks at Redmond Pie, an iOS 4.2.1 compatible version of Cydia is ready. They say it will go live as soon as iOS 4.2.1 is publicly released.

Apple is known to have encountered a few issues with the planned iOS 4.2 November launch. The iPhone maker was forced to delay the software not once, not twice, but three times, with this week’s reported iOS 4.2.1 GM seed.

Those knowledgeable in such matters claim this last build will undergo a full week of testing before being released to the general population as the final iOS 4.2.1 software update.

When it’s released, the update will be applicable on most iOS devices, excepting first-generation iPhone and iPod touch units, and the second-generation Apple TV.
