Hewlett Packard has confirmed the launch of its Palm Pre 2 smartphone on the market in the UK, and unveiled the fact that the new device should be released on shelves in the country on Monday, November 15th, priced at £399.
According to HP, the handset will be launched on the UK market SIM-free and unlocked.
The new device runs under the webOS 2.0 operating system, and was already made available for purchase in France via wireless carrier SFR.
However, starting with Monday, more European mobile phone users will have the chance to tryout the new handset, as HP will bring it to the UK market as well.
Not only is the new Palm Pre 2 the first smartphone to be released on the market following HP's purchase of the mobile phone maker, but it is also the first webOS phone to be launched since last year's arrival of Pre and Pixi.
The new mobile phone boasts a 3.1-inch touchscreen display, capable of delivering a 320 x 480 pixels (HVGA) resolution, complemented by a slide-out QWERTY keyboard.
“HP webOS 2.0 is the biggest leap forward for webOS since it launched 17 months ago,” said Miles Norman, UK sales director for HP's Palm division, a recent article on PC Pro reads.
“It expands the features that make webOS great for consumers, enterprises and developers, and introduces powerful new features that make it easier to get more things done.”
The new smartphone also sports a 1GHz application processor, while featuring a 5-megapixel photo snapper on the back. The Palm Pre 2 also comes with 16GB of on-board memory, while offering support for USB mass storage.
The new device also comes with enhanced multimedia features, including support for MP3, AAC, AAC+ music files, and MPEG-4, H.263 and H.264 video files.
The company plans on making the webOS 2.0 update available for its existing UK users too, at a later date, offering them support for Adobe Flash Player 10.1, support for HTML5 features, and more.
