HTC Desire Tastes Android 2.2 Froyo at Virgin Media

More HTC Desire owners out there have now the possibility to enjoy the Android 2.2 Froyo operating system on their devices, as Virgin Media has just announced the delivery of this solution to its users.

According to the company, the new software update was released specifically for the Desire handsets with the Virgin firmware version 1.23.351.1.

At the same time, the company announced that those Desire users owning a handset with the original 1.15.405.4 firmware on board would have to update to the 1.23.351.1 firmware before being able to download and install the Froyo update.

“This is an FOTA (Firmware Over The Air) update which means that you will be prompted to download the update on their handset,” a recent post on the wireless carrier's website notes.

As always with this type of software updates, users are advised to download the file over a Wi-Fi connection. Moreover, they should back up all data on their devices before launching the update process, so as to make sure that no important files are lost during the installation.

Some of the main enhancements the new software update brings to Desire handsets include:

- Ability to save applications to the SD card
- Compatibility with more Android Market Place apps
- Facebook updates and birthday reminders on the call screen
- Option to secure phone with PIN or password (as well as pattern)
- Use the device as a portable Wi-Fi hotspot
- Flashlight app now preinstalled (use the camera flash as a torch)
- LED light now available in camcorder mode
- HD video record

As stated above, the wireless carrier will push the software update to all of its users in the near future.

However, in case there are some who would like to update their mobile phones before the software is pushed to them, they can go to Menu > Settings > About Phone > System Software Updates > Check Now to see whether the solution is already available for them or not.
